The story behind the place
The Triple Bridge started as a practical river crossing. A stone bridge stood here from 1842, replacing an older medieval wooden bridge that had long connected important routes across Ljubljana. In the 1920s and early 1930s, architect Jože Plečnik reworked the site in a way that turned utility into urban design: he added two pedestrian side bridges, removed the old metal railings, and unified the composition with stone balustrades and lamps. The result was not just more capacity, but a small civic stage linking the river, the square, and the market. The bridge’s role in the city has remained symbolic ever since, and a 1992 renovation preserved its modern form for today’s visitors.
