The story behind the place
Butchers’ Bridge is a newer piece of Ljubljana’s riverside story, but it was designed to feel connected to the city’s deeper architectural memory. Visit Ljubljana says the bridge opened in 2010 on the spot where Jože Plečnik had imagined a bridge almost a century earlier. MGML’s Plečnik exhibition shows that the intended bridge was part of a larger riverfront composition: a market colonnade, loggias, and a planned crossing that would cap the whole ensemble. In that sense, the bridge is not just a functional footway; it completes a long-running urban idea. Today, the site is known more romantically than commercially. It became Ljubljana’s “love bridge,” where couples attach padlocks and leave the keys in the Ljubljanica. The bridge also carries sculptural interventions by Jakov Brdar, whose figures give the crossing a slightly eerie, theatrical edge and tie it back to the former butchers’ booths that once occupied this part of the riverbank.
