The story behind the place
From technical showpiece to city symbol
Dragon Bridge began as a practical replacement for the old wooden Butchers’ Bridge, but it quickly became much more than a crossing. Built between 1900 and 1901, it was Ljubljana’s first reinforced-concrete structure and, at the time, one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Its engineering was led by Josef Melan, while the dragons and other decorative details were designed by Jurij Zaninović. The result is a bridge that combines early-20th-century structural innovation with the city’s most famous symbol: the dragon. That mix of utility, modern design, and myth explains why the bridge still anchors so many Ljubljana images and why it remains an easy must-stop on any old-town walk.
