The story behind the place
Kaiyukan opened on 20 July 1990 as part of Osaka Port’s waterfront redevelopment, and its concept was unusually ambitious for its time: to recreate Pacific Rim seas as a layered journey from the surface down to the deep ocean. That design choice is still the aquarium’s signature. Rather than presenting marine life as isolated displays, Kaiyukan arranges habitats around real geography and ecology, with the whale shark-filled Pacific Ocean tank as the visual anchor. Official tourism sources also note that the aquarium helped reshape expectations for what an aquarium could be, and that it became a major repeat-visit destination for families and couples.
