The story behind the place
Local pond, local legend
Bandai Pond Park is a modest neighborhood green space, but its identity is shaped by a long-running local legend. Osaka-INFO says the story appears in the 1927 Sumiyoshi Village Chronicle: a demon was said to have lived in the pond and caused trouble for residents. In the tale, Prince Shotoku sent someone from Shitennoji to chant a sutra, after which the demon disappeared. The sutra was the Mandala Sutra, which is why the pond was said to have been called Mandala Pond before the name gradually changed to Bandai Pond. Today, the park is less about monuments than everyday use: walking, birdwatching, spring blossoms, and a small playground make it a quiet local place rather than a formal tourist site.
