The story behind the place
St. James's Park started far from today’s polished setting: The Royal Parks describes it as former marshland in the River Tyburn floodplain. Henry VIII turned it into a deer park in the 1530s, and James I later improved drainage and added exotic animals, including an elephant, camels, a crocodile, and birds kept near what is now Birdcage Walk. Charles II then imposed a major French-influenced redesign in the 1660s, using the park as both a fashionable royal setting and a place to meet courtiers and his mistress Nell Gwynn. In the 1820s, John Nash softened the formal geometry by replacing the canal with a curving lake and winding paths. That evolution explains the park’s unusual mix of ceremonial grandeur and intimate wildlife habitat today.
