The story behind the place
Arc de Triomf was not built as a military memorial, but as an entrance marker for Barcelona’s 1888 Universal Exhibition. Architect Josep Vilaseca gave it classical proportions but used red brick and neo-Mudejar decoration, making the monument feel distinctly tied to the city and the period in which Barcelona was presenting itself as modern and outward-looking.
