Tokyo Itineraries

Tokyo FAQ

The easiest months for most travelers are late March to April and October to November. Spring brings cherry blossoms and very busy crowds, while autumn is cooler, drier, and especially good for long walking days.

Four to five days is a strong first trip. That gives you time for classic areas like Asakusa, Ueno, Shibuya, and one or two museums or neighborhoods without turning the trip into a station-to-station rush.

Use trains and the metro for the longer moves, then explore each area on foot. Tokyo works best in neighborhood clusters, so it is more efficient to group stops like Asakusa and Ueno or Shibuya and Harajuku on the same day.

Most visitors should use an IC card such as Suica or Pasmo. It is simpler and more flexible than trying to optimize around separate subway or JR passes for a short city trip.

Haneda is the easiest airport for central Tokyo because it is much closer. Narita is still straightforward, but the trip is longer and usually takes about 40-60 minutes by Narita Express or Skyliner before you reach the city.

Shinjuku, Shibuya, Tokyo Station, and Ueno are the most practical bases for a first trip. They give you strong transport connections, plenty of food options, and easy access to major sightseeing areas.

Cards are widely accepted, but carrying some yen is still useful. Smaller restaurants, shrine areas, older neighborhood shops, and a few ticket machines can still be cash-first or just more convenient with cash.

Yes, Tokyo is one of the safer major cities for visitors. Normal city awareness still matters in busy stations and nightlife districts, but everyday sightseeing is generally smooth and low-stress.

Book timed attractions and special exhibitions ahead, especially in cherry blossom season and autumn weekends. Temples, parks, and many neighborhood sights are usually flexible, but places like observation decks and teamLab are better with reservations.
